Finally, my thesis is now submitted!! The subject I chose was “Technological Assessment and Policy Recommendations for Large-scale Peak-shaving Energy Storage in Grids with a High Proportion of Renewable Energy“. At the beginning of my thesis, it was going to be very technical, then I thought - that’s been well covered. Then I moved to the business case of energy storage. For peak-shaving energy storage, there isn’t THAT much movement - often I read “in 5 years time this will be big” from studies in like, 2001 - but nothing yet.
So I’ve decided to analyze the part that can help pave the way towards deployment - the policy framework. The main part of this thesis was analyzing the currently already available renewable energy policies - and from these extract the learnings and see how the policy instruments and policy design criteria might be suitable for future energy storage policies.
You can download the submitted version here (PDF, about 6MB).
