The RWE Power Lauf Half Marathon and how Training is freakin’ important (My Road to Marathon)

by Oliver Adria on May 17, 2009

Today I ran my first half marathon after the birch pollen allergy season, where I have to stay out of races for 4-6 weeks. After the vacation in Jakarta, Indonesia in January (it’s hard to find a running spot there) and some races in February and march, I had to stay out most of April and May - so I lost 11 whole minutes from my half marathon record of 1:38:33. I ran a 1:49:26… it was quite hill-y in small Paffendorf, but still 11 minutes is waaay too much. I guess not training as intensively has a huuuge effect. And I’ve gained 4 kgs since the last half marathon (due to vacations, exams, allergy season, work).

I have a Night Run in a few days (10,5 km across Cologne’s bridges) which I will be running with Eva. For the first time, this week I will join some running groups… I’ve been running alone for the past 9 months. Some interaction with other runners might not be a bad idea. I will go to different groups, let’s see what happen.

I’m still thinking about whether or not to go to the 34km (with hills totalling up to 1200 meters) race on May 31st ‘09. That’s 2 weeks away… I’m not in my top shape, but I’m ok. It’s a challenge I’d like to take. I just don’t want to take too big of a risk to an injury. The season’s just begun.

My short-term goal is get to under 44 minutes in the 10km race on June 17th and the full marathon (debut) in Cologne in under 3h 30m (this is in October 2009).rwe_powerlauf_1rwe_powerlauf_2rwe_powerlauf_3
